SEEDS OF CHANGE: Cultivating the Future of Journalism In Africa

We call on members of the broader journalistic community, civil society and academia to join us at Rhodes University's Journalism Summit to deliberate on the future of journalism in South Africa and on the African continent. Delegates will work together to develop strategies and resources that serve as a strong foundation for journalism in volatile times.

They will plan towards the creation of more interactive, democratic and media spaces, both in South Africa and in our neighbouring countries.

The Makhanda Declaration

The Summit is organised around the crafting of a public statement, which we are calling the Makhanda Declaration, as a gesture back in time to the Windhoek Declaration of more than 30 years ago.  The aim is for it to be a courageous declaration, expressive of the shared commitment to journalism amongst academics, journalists and activists present at the Summit.

We will share the statement publicly on the final morning of the Summit. Please join us at the Summit to stand in support of journalists and journalism in South Africa and in Africa.

Should you have any queries or problems registering please contact the organising conference team via one of the options on the Contact Page.

We look forward to seeing you in Makhanda on April 4 – 6 where delegates can join virtually or in person.
